Raksha Bandhan

August 30, 2023

Rakhi and sweets in a plate to celebrate Raksha Bandhan

Raksha Bandhan is a traditional Hindu festival that celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters. The festival is mainly celebrated in India and Nepal, but it is also observed in other parts of the world where there are Hindu communities.

The word “Raksha Bandhan” means “the bond of protection” in Sanskrit. During the festival, sisters tie a sacred thread called “Rakhi” on their brothers’ wrists, symbolising their love, affection, and commitment to protect them from any harm or danger. In return, brothers pledge to protect their sisters and offer them gifts and sweets.

The festival is usually celebrated on the full moon day in the Hindu month of Shravana, which falls in July or August according to the Gregorian calendar. It is believed to have originated in ancient times when women tied amulets on their husbands’ wrists before sending them to battle, to protect them from harm.

In addition to strengthening the bond between brothers and sisters, Raksha Bandhan also celebrates the love and affection shared between all family members. The festival is a time for feasting, exchanging gifts, and enjoying the company of loved ones.
